The water used in gold heap leaching is recycled process water. So, the same 1 gallon of water can be used to recover may grams of gold.
However, in gold heap leaching, water balance can be a concern in arid regions with limited water resources. The amount of water that is used to rinse heaps to get the gold out is sometimes less than the amoutn of water required to do a standard heap detoxification. This amout of water may be a significant concern in places like Peru.
